In the heart of the Rockies; a story of adventure in Colorado G A 18321902 Henty 9781172285488 Books Reviews

A well written adventure that moves at an excellent pace. Engrossing details on outdoor skills such as survival and tracking, but these are well spaced and enhance the story. Definitely a must for fans of frontier literature and western expansion. A picture into a long gone era of when America was still wild. Highly recommended.
Good story. Written long enough ago that the author had knowledge of skills that have been mostly lost. The racial attitudes of the era make you cringe but they're not mean spirited just the prevailing ignorance of those times. A good read if the old west interests you.
I cannot say that I enjoyed reading this book. While the plot was captivating, the dialogue was cringe-worthy. G. A. Henty makes all his characters in this book talk like they would had they been real people. So, with a book filled with poor english speakers, you can probably see how this could get rather old. All-in-all, an interesting read but can't say that I would recommend it as anything other that a bedtime story.
All the G A Henty books are good reading. They give a sense of life in the era of the setting of the story. Good adventure stories for boys of all ages, including retirees. Sorry, modern teenagers, no sex or foul language here, you will have to get that from TV shows. And have a dictionary handy, these were written for teenage boys of that Victorian era, who actually learned what all these words meant in school.
I wish I had clicked on the option to "look inside" with this book. This reprint is awful. I will not give it as a Christmas gift for the young man I selected it for this year. My own son read many of the G.A. Henty books as a boy and we loved them. The problem is that the pages are reprinted in such a way that it looks like it was copied from an original book and reprinted with what should be the top of a page found in the middle of a page and page breaks found at random places, making it very difficult to read. Shoddy work at best. Don't waste your money.
The story starts off a slow and the dialogue is old fashioned, staid and formal, (but then again historians say people actually did talk that way). But it gets interesting, especially once the boy meets his uncle, and the characters and action sequences get better, and the historical and geographical details appear accurate and are interesting. This is an old book with lots of negative language and stereotypes about native Americans,. It also glorifies ecologically destructive mining practices and stealing land from the natives. But from the perspective of a book that reflects how white people actually thought and acted in the early 1800's its probably somewhat accurate and a fun read once you get into it.
Henty's boys' stories tend to have similar plots (boy is thrown into dangerous adventures and survives and develops into a fine you man... and gets the girl, wealth, nobility and acceptance). This is fun and comfortable but the really interesting part is the historical research that Henty uses to make the mountain man, cowboy, indian, etc. When this was written, there were people living who could give the author far more detailed information on the life described in this book. I'm no longer young, but I enjoy the English boy's stories and especially "In the Heart of the Rockies"!
